Q

Why should I work?

A
  1. Because of need
Proverbs 16:26 The appetite of the laborer works for them; their hunger drives them on.

2 Thes 3:10 Even when we were with you we gave you this rule: The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.

  1. Because of want
Exodus 20:17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor
  2. Made up need
Proverbs 6:6-8 6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise : 7 Which having no guide, overseer , or ruler , 8 Provideth her meat in the summer, [and] gathereth her food in the harvest.
  3. Obligation
1 Timothy 5:8 8 But if someone does not provide for his own, especially his own family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
  4. opportunity
Ecclesiastes 11:6 Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let not your hands be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that or whether both will do equally well.
  5. Riches
Proverbs 10:4 Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich
Proverbs 14:23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty
  6. Satisfaction

Ecclesiastes 2:24-25 24 There is nothing better for people than to eat and drink,
and to find enjoyment in their work. I also perceived that this ability to find enjoyment comes from God 25 For no one can eat and drink or experience joy apart from him. 26 For to the one who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy,
but to the sinner, he gives the task of amassing wealth
only to give it to the one who pleases God. This task of the wicked is futile—like chasing the wind!

God’s Purpose

! Corinthians 9:26 I run with purpose in every step I take, I am not just shadow boxing.

Colossians 3:17
17 And whatever you do, whether by speech or action, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Colossians 3:23-24
3 Whatever you do, work at it wholeheartedly as though you were doing it for the Lord and not merely for people. 24 You know that it is from the Lord that you will receive the inheritance as a reward. It is the Lord Messiah whom you are serving!

Q

How does affluence affect the need for coaching

A

proverbs 30:8-9

Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say ‘Whos is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

The increase of affluence brings increased freedom of choice, that is resulting in being stuck not knowing what to choose.

Q

expressive individualism

A

The purpose of life
To give expression to your true inner self.

View of human beings:

  1. Humans are inherently good
  2. human beings are defined by their individual psychological core, and that the purpose of life is allowing that core to find social expression in relationships.

Success:

  1. lIving authenticly,
  2. living life your way, unbounded by unchosen obligations or commitments.

ethics:

  1. This inner voice is morally authoritative and defines the route forward to realizing the authentic self.
  2. Tolerance: Living by one’s own light, allowing others to do the same.
  3. The truth about the self is thus not determined externally, and sometimes must be pursued counter-culturally, over and above the mores of one’s community.
  4. The highest good is individual freedom, happiness, self-definition, and self-expression.
Traditions, religions, received wisdom, regulations, and social ties that restrict individual freedom, happiness, self-definition, and self-expression must be reshaped, deconstructed, or destroyed.

5.Any deviation from this ethic of tolerance is dangerous and must not be tolerated.

ethics:

  1. authenticity
  2. open and honest communication and ―fair psychological exchange.
Slogans:
You be you.
Be true to yourself.
Follow your heart.
Find yourself.

examples:
new age gurus
hippies

Q

What are the broader implications of self conception

A

A society’s understanding of the notion of “self” has broad implications for the cultural, moral, and political spheres. The modern notion of self, which can be called “expressive individualism,” to use Robert Bellah’s term, lies at the heart of current cultural conflicts, including abortion, pornography, the ethics of life and death, radical racial politics, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. Expressive individualism holds that human beings are defined by their individual psychological core, and that the purpose of life is allowing that core to find social expression in relationships. Anything that challenges it is deemed oppressive. Building a society based on a true understanding of the human person begins with an acknowledgement of the situation in which we find ourselves.

Q

4 Differences between Coaching and Therapy, according to Williams and Davis?

A
  1. Past versus future.

Therapy focuses on the past and has a problem that needs solving, whereas coaching focuses on the future assuming that ―the client is whole and capable of having a wonderful life.

  1. Fix versus create.

Clients seek therapists as a source of fixing or eliminating their problems; clients seek coaches to help them to get more out of their life.

  1. Professional versus collegial.

Therapy sees the therapist as an expert, whereas coaching sees the coach as a partner who supports the client in his or her attempts to create an even better life.

  1. Limited versus open.

Therapists are limited in the way they generate clients, whereas coaches can approach others more openly about their services, and discuss their services. For therapists, coaching therefore opens new business possibilities.51

Q

ethic individualism

A

ethical egoism or ethical individualism, clearly formulated by philosophers like David Norton.60 In this tradition, life is primarily a matter of bringing forth or leading out (eudamonia) one‘s unique set of potentialities (one‘s daimon).
