Counseling: Sexual Sin Flashcards
What is the proper context for understanding sex?
The gospel context, which is neither legalism, nor hyper-grace
Why is hyper-grace not grace?
Because true grace flows into holiness (being separate from sin)
Hyper-Grace is an excuse used to indulge in the lusts of the flesh, it becomes a license to sin.
Feeble attempts to deal with sin?
Trying to defeat sin:
- in our own effort
- by letting go and letting God (deliverance)
- just trying to stop
- trying to please and indulge in our sin at the same time
What should our response convey to a counselee who is struggling with sin?
There is always help and hope in christ
We should never condemn the counselee, or make them feel ashamed
3 questions to ask if people don’t want to tell you what they are struggling with?
- Is it criminal?
- Is it sexual in nature?
- Does it involve someone else that you don’t want me to know about?
What happens when you start to suppress the word of God, God, and righteousness in a society?
People are unable to discern between wrong and right, and so those things that are wrong, seem right and normal
suppressing the truth leads us down the abyss described in Romans 1, which ends in destruction
Are there more than two genders?
No, only male and female.
Gen 1:27
So God created human beings[a] in his own image. In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
Not simply genitalia, but chromosomes xx and xy, therefore in every cell in our body, we are either male or female.
Is sex something that is shameful?
No, God commanded it and called it “very good.”
Gen 1:28
28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”
Gen 1:31
Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!
Is sex for everyone?
Sex is for married people only.
Gen 2:24
Key old testament passages about sex
Gen 1:27-31 Gen 2:24-25 Gen 4:1, 17 1 Sam 1:19 Prov 2:16-19, 5:15-20;6:20-35, 7:1-27 Song of Solomon
Key new testament passages about sex
Hebrews 13:4 1 Tim 4:1-3 1 Thess. 4:3-5 Eph 5 1 Cor 6:12-7:5 Mark 6:18 Rom 1:24-28
What is the importance of being content?
discontent often spills over into our marriages, resulting in discontent with our spouses, which in turn could result in adultery and sexual immorality
Hebrews 13:4-5
4 Give honor to marriage and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.
5 Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said,
“I will never fail you.
I will never abandon you.”[b]

- Secular: comes from within AKA “authenticity”
- Bible: derived from the gospel
Secular vs Biblical View: Authority
Authority
- Secular: comes from within and is subjective
- Bible: Comes from God and is objective
Secular vs Biblical View: the origin of problems
Problems:
- Secular: Derives from nature and nurture
- Bible: fundamentally derives from our sinful nature and the condition of the heart

- Bible: led by truth
Secular vs Biblical view: Who is the enemy
The enemy:
- Secular: family, religion, tradition (external authority),
- Bible: Satan, the flesh, the world
Secular vs Biblical view

- secular: Is subjective and changes to fit one’s desires
- Bible: is Objective and defines and limits desires
Secular vs Biblical view: Sexual Identity

Bible: Determined by God, and indicated by our physiology or bodies.
Secular vs Biblical view: Sin
Secular: possible a crime against another
Bible: Any transgression of God’s law
Secular vs Biblical View: God
Secular: Either, God doesn’t exist, or we are our own Gods, or if He exists then God is all love, tolerant, and accepting of everything and everyone (either way this God does not require us to change, and we can continue to do what we want) (basically, a god of their imagination)
Bible: God is the creator, not just loving and righteous. He is holy, abhors sin and requires us to live holy lives (we cannot do whatever we want)
Secular vs Biblical view: The Bible
Secular: product of man, full of errors, and open to interpretation
Biblical: God-inspired, inerrant, authoritative, and sufficient holy word for all things pertaining to life and holiness. Not a matter of personal interpretation
Should we blame parents for the sins of their children?
No, parents can only show their children the way. Parents can evangelize, but not a disciple.
Every person is responsible for their own sin (Ezekiel 13)
What should we do when we have impure thoughts?
Don’t simply live with them but take them captive and renew them with God’s word.

The goals of counseling
We want counselee’s to:
Trust, obey, glorify, and delight in God
Progression of Christlike living
- Knowledge of God. Know and Understand God, his nature, character, and attributes
- Fear of God: Be in reverent awe of his majesty and power
- Love of God:
- Trust, and Obey God with delight
Omission of these leads to the commission of sin
According to Titus 2:11-14, what is God training us for?
To renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God, and Saviour Jesus Christ.
