Luke 19:20-21

20 “But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe. 21 I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’

Q

The greatest fear

A

The fear of death

Taken away by Christ

Hebrews 2:14-15

“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, an deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”

Our greatest need has been met in Christ

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” 1 John 4:18 – Part of maturity is recognizing that the greatest fear is death, which has been completely removed by Christ.

Q

What is absolutely essential for dealing with fear

A

A theological understanding of God and His nature.

Before we can tell people to “stop fearing” we first have to build a bridge of theology that can bear the weight of the command “Do not fear”

Psalm 46 Demonstrates this, by first describing the character and nature of God before the psalmist declares “we will not fear”

Psalm 46 describes God’s character and nature as:

  • God is our refuge
  • God is our strength
  • God is always ready to help in times of need

Psalm 46 1 - 3

1.God is our refuge and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.
2 So we will not fear when earthquakes come
and the mountains crumble into the sea.
3 Let the oceans roar and foam.
Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!

Psalm 5:7 Describes God’s unfailing love for us. Nobody can obligate God to love and care for us. God has obligated himself to care for us.

Psalm 5:7

7 Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe.

Q

How can we put on the fear of God?

A
  1. Magnify the “bigness” of God (Isaiah 40, Job 38)
  2. Understand the attributes of God
  3. Understand how people responded to the awesomeness of God
    - Study the Psalmist’s theology -who do they say God is, and what do they say God does.
    - What are the circumstances mentioned by the psalmist
    - What is their response to their theology (nature and character of God)
17
Q

How to use a journal for worry, fear, and anxiety

A

record circumstances, thoughts, feelings, responses, results

Look for themes

18
Q

What is the reward for trusting in God

A

God renews our strength

Isaiah 40:31

31 But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

God sustains us and helps us prosper during difficult times

Jeremiah 17:7-8

“7. But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
8 They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.

19
Q

What is the curse for not trusting in God?

A
  1. The inability to prosper
  2. Hopelessness and Dispair for the future

Jeremiah 17:5-6

  1. This is what the Lord says:
“Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans,
    who rely on human strength
and turn their hearts away from the Lord.
6 They are like stunted shrubs in the desert,
with no hope for the future.
They will live in the barren wilderness,
    in an uninhabited salty land.
20
Q

If the bible tells us not to worry, does that mean we don’t have to plan or prepare?

A

No. We should plan and prepare for the future.

  • “Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.” (Proverbs 24:27)
  • “Making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:16)
  • “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)
21
Q

People often confuse worry with preparing for the future, are they the same?

A

Sinful anxiety is not proper care and concern that causes you to attend to business in a responsible way (2 Cor 11:28; Phil 2:20; Gal 4:19)

Anxiety is not right planning (prov 24:27, James 4:13-15, Eph 5:16;ps 90:12)

22
Q

What is anxiety or worry?

A

It is an overzealous concern about the future of things, that monopolizes a person’s attention and distracts from what is really important.

Anxiety is over zealous concern about the future and things (Matt 6:25)

The Greek word intimates the idea of your heart being monopolized by a particular care

It is derived from a word that means “to divide, part, rip, tear apart, be anxious, distract your attention (Matt 12:25; Mark 6:41; Mark 4:19)

In Mathew 6 the use of the word means to have your mind in the wrong kingdom

23
Q

Why is anxiety a sin?

A

Double-mindedness and idolatry (two masters) : “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and espies the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Matt 6:24

It is unbecoming: Likened to unbelievers

It is unbelief Matt 6:30
O you of little faith

It is an exorbitant concern for the servant’s kingdom, not the king’s kingdom (Matt 6:33)

Lack of trusting God, by
Focusing on what we don’t have “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? Or What shall we drink? Or What shall we wear? (Matthew 6:31)

24
Q

Matthew 6:25- 34

A

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing? 26 Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than they are? 27 And which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life? 28 Why do you worry about clothing? Think about how the flowers of the field grow; they do not work or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these! 30 And if this is how God clothes the wild grass, which is here today and tomorrow is tossed into the fire to heat the oven, won’t he clothe you even more, you people of little faith? 31 So then, don’t worry saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the unconverted pursue these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But above all pursue his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 So then, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.

25
Q

Is God bigger than our problems?

A

Are your problems as untamed as the ocean? God holds them in the hollow of his hand (Isaiah40:12)

Are your sorrows as vast as the heavens? God measures them like a carpenter at his workbench (Isaiah 40:12)

Are your burdens as heavy as the Mountains? God picks them up and puts them on his scale (Isaiah 40:12)

26
Q

What happens when God speaks?

A

(Gen; Isaiah) Darkness flees, stars burn and planets lock into orbit, rivers run and oceans fill earth’s floor; valleys sink and mountains race to the sky.
