Q

Christ-like character

A
  1. Love our wives as Christ loves the Church

(Does the way I love my wife help her be more like Christ?)

Eph 5:25

25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,

  1. We have to be
    - Above reproach (integrity)
    - a model of self-control
    - singular in our love for our wives
    - tempered, prudent and respectable
    - Hospitable (dont see people as a burden)
    - Able to teach
    - Without addiction
    - Gentle

1 Tim. 3:1-7,

3 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

Titus 1:7-9

  1. This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— 6 if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. 7 For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, 8 but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. 9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

Titus 2:2,

2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness

Titus 2:6-8,

Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us

Q

How do we grow in Christ-like doctrine

A
  1. ) Our Theology influences everything we do, so we need to make sure we have sound doctrine
  2. ) Sound doctrine protects us from the influence of the world.

Eph 4:14

14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ

1 Timothy 4:1-2

Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,

  1. ) Sound doctrine prevents us from leading ourselves and others astray

1 Timothy 4:16

Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

  1. ) Our doctrine needs to be orthodox

1 Timothy 6:3

3 If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness,

Titus 2:1, 7, 10

  1. But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine

7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity

10 Not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.

Q

How do we Pursue Christ-like Leadership/Role

A

Leadership through service to others with humility

Eph 5:23-24

23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

1 Cor 11:3

3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.

Lead by example of humble service

Mark 10:45

45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Phil 2:3-8

3 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Q

What did Peter mean when he said that our wives are weaker than us?

A

He meant that they are “different” than us and that we can treat our wives like we treat our buddies. By weaker, he means “more precious” like the difference between a coffee mug and a precious crystal wine glass.
