SPECIFIC SYMPTOMS OF THE FOREFOOT Flashcards
▪ Non-specific term for pain in forefoot at met level or MPJs
▪ Can be caused by arthritis, occlusive or spastic vascular conditions, neuropathies or trauma
▪ Most frequent cause is microtrauma by abnormal pronation of foot during propulsion
Metatarsalgia
▪ Tissue trauma with metatarsalgia is preliminary cause of shearing callus
▪ Excessive met head shearing caused by a hypermobile foot during propulsion results in increased tissue trauma
Shearing Callus
▪ Resulting shearing between mets, associated with abnormal pronation during propulsion
▪ Trauma of subcutaneous tissues results in progressive fibrosis around neurovascular bundle in traumatized tissue
▪ Neuroma develops in the area of bifurcation of the neurovascular bundle passing into the toes = intermetatarsal neuroma
