PLANAL DOMINANCE Flashcards
o Can be seen either with arthrometric examination or a gait analysis
o Any excessive motion seen in a plane will indicate dominance in that plane
planal dominance
Planal dominance is caused by?
deviation of a joint axis allowing more motion than normal to occur in that plane
name this planal dominance?
▪ Excessive _____ plane motion of calcaneus will be indicative of STJ axis closer to the transverse plane
▪ Arthrometric examination shows more than 2:1 ratio of inversion to eversion
• Then planal dominance exists in this plane for STJ axis
Frontal Plane
name this planal dominance?
▪ See increased dorsiflexion of forefoot on rearfoot
▪ Indicates a deviation of the OMTJ axis more toward frontal plane or closer to perpendicular to the sagittal plane
Sagittal plane
name this planal dominance?
▪ See excessive abduction of forefoot on rearfoot
▪ Indicates more vertical OMTJ axis
• OMTJ axis deviated closer to sagittal plane, or more perpendicular to the transverse plane
▪ See a decrease in STJ inversion and eversion below normal 2: 1 ratio
▪ May indicate planal dominance of STJ in transverse plane
• See more transverse plane motion wanting to occur at STJ
• More motion can’t occur because forefoot is in contact with ground
o Instead see internal/ external rotation of leg
▪ Axis of STJ deviated more toward the frontal plane and perpendicular to the transverse plane
Transverse plane
