PROPULSION Flashcards
when does propulsion begin?
begins with heel off of the stance phase foot and ends with toe off
what are the primary events seen in propulsion?
subtalar supination mid tarsal joint 1st ray plantarflexion metatarsal phalangeal dorsiflexion hip flexion knee flexion external limb rotation
in propulsion, describe subtalar supination?
supination continues about STJ axis into the propulsive period of gait
for the mid tarsal joint, what lifts the lateral side fo the forefoot to transfer weight medially for propulsion?
peroneal muscles
for the midtarsal joint, what happens to the oblique and lateral axis?
OMTJ supinates with lateral to medial loading of forefoot to transfer weight medially for propulsion, causes plantarflexion and adduction of the forefoot on the rearfoot, intrinsic muscles help
LMTJ is pronating and so everts forefoot on the rearfoot and so loading occurs lateral to medial with LMTJ pronated
what is the affect of STJ and OMTJ as a result of propulsion?
causes transverse compression between mid foot bones making the foot rigid
when doe 1st ray plantarflexion happen?
late in midst acne in response to rearfoot supination which continues on through propulsion
this muscle is primarily responsible for plantarflexing th e1st ray and keeping it firm against the sesamoids?
abductor hallucis muscle
in the metatarsal phalangeal dorsiflexion, do the toes bear weight during contact or midstance?
toes do not bear weight
when the heels lift during propulsion what dorsiflexes the digits?
GRFs
how do the long digital flexors to exert a plantarflexory force on the toes?
metatarsal heads become pulleys stabilizing them against the ground
how are IPJs forcibly extended?
by the extensor muscles and at the final moments of propulsion the IPJs are flexed slightly
when do the vertical GRFs peak for the second time?
during the propulsive period by the ball of the foot and toes due to heel lift
describe the hip flexion during propulsive period?
this occurs throughout the propulsive period
when do the knees flex?
prior to propulsive period and throughout
