Soc20 Levers Flashcards
What is a Lever
The term Lever refers to a system of muscles and bones working together to bring about movement,When exercising your muscles pull on bones and your bones create movement acting as levers.
How does a lever work?
(The four components)
1)Fulcrum- (Or Pivot)-The point around which the lever rotates (joints)
2) Load - the force that is applied by the lever system
(resistance/ object).
3) Effort - a force that is applied by the user of the lever
system (muscles).
4) Lever arm - a rigid bar such as a bone.
Three types of levers
First class
second class
third class
Examples of a first class lever
A tricep dip or nodding your head
Examples of a second class lever
Calf raises and a wheelbarrow
Examples of a third class lever
A bicep curl and using a spade
What is a fulcrum
Fulcrum - (or pivot) - the point around which the lever
rotates (joints).
What is the load?
Load - the force that is applied by the lever system
(resistance/ object).
What is the effort?
Effort - a force that is applied by the user of the lever
system (muscles).
What is a lever arm?
Lever arm - a rigid bar such as a bone.
What word do we use to remember the order of which part of the lever is in the middle
FLE
What is a Mechanical Advantage
It is a large load that can be lifted with a relatively small amount of effort
When the effort arm is longer than the load arm
Formula of Mechanical Advantage
Effort Arm/ Resistance Arm
