Q

What is a Short Bone - With Examples

A

Short bones are usually associated with weight baring, shock absorption and spreading loads. They play a key role in activities like jogging, playing tennis or dancing.

Q

What is a Long Bone - With Examples

A

These bones are vital to generate movement, strength and speed. They usually act as levers. When they are pulled by different muscles, they enable the body to move.

Q

What is an Irregular Bone - With Examples

A

Irregular bones offer protection when playing sport, they tend to form specific functions for example the first and second vertebrae allow the head to turn and nod.

Q

What is a Flat Bone - With Examples

A

Flat bones protect your organs in contact sports and provide attachment for muscles to help movement.

Q

What are the 4 types of Joints?

A

Condyloid
Hinge
Ball and Socket
Pivot

17
Q

What is a Condyloid Joint?

A

Similar to ball and socket ,ball rests against end of bone, allows circular motion ,in your wrist and ankle

18
Q

What is Flexion?

A

bending movement that decreases the angle between body parts

19
Q

What is Extension?

A

straightening movement that increases the angle between body parts

20
Q

What is Dorsi-Flexion?

A

bending or flexing the toes up, closer to the shin

21
Q

What is Plantar-Flexion?

A

extending or pointing the toes down, away from the shin

22
Q

What is Abduction?

A

movement that pulls away from the midline of the body

23
Q

What is Adduction?

A

movement that pulls towards the midline of the body

24
Q

What is Rotation?

A

movement around a single axis or pivot point

25
Q

What is Circumduction?

A

moving in a circular or conical shape

26
Q

What is a Hinge Joint?

A

These can be found in the elbow, knee and ankle. Hinge joints are like the hinges on a door, and allow you to move the elbow and knee in only one direction

27
Q

What is a Ball and Socket Joint?

A

these types of joint can be found at the shoulder and hip and allow movement in almost every direction. A ball and socket joint is made up of a round end of one bone that fits into a small cup-like area of another bone.

28
Q

What is a Pivot Joint?

A

this joint can be found in the neck between the top two vertebrae. It allows only rotational movement such as moving your head from side to side as if you were saying ‘no’.

29
Q

What is a Tendon?

A

Tendons are non-elastic fibres that attach muscle to bone and help to move them. Tendons let you apply power and movement. Tendons also grow in strength the more you use them.

30
Q

What is a Ligament?

A

Ligaments are elastic fibres taht joins bone to bone usually to hold things and keep them stable. They keep your skeleton supported whilst allowing movements

31
Q

What is the real name of the skull

A

Cranium
