Soc17 The Structure Of The Respiratory System Flashcards
What does the respiratory system include
It includes: nose, mouth, throat, voicebox, windpipe, lungs and blood vessels
Why do we need our respiratory system?
-To get oxygen into the body
-To remove Carbon Dioxide from the body
-In sport or physical activity, the reapiratory amd cardiovascular systema must work closely together to keep the body supplied with oxygen
When Inhaling/Inspiration happens how much oxygen and carbon dioxide is being taken in
20% Oxygen + 0.4% Carbon Dioxide
When exhaling/expiration happens how much oxygen and carbon dioxide is being taken in
16% Oxygen + 4% Carbon dioxide
What happens to our breathing when we exercise?
Increased depth of breathing
Breathing rate increases
What is Respiration
The movement of air from outside the body into the cells within tissues
What does the Diaphragm do?
Diaphragm: the primary muscle used in the process of inspiration, or inhalation. A dome-shaped sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the rest of the body cavity.
What is the Trachea used for
The tube that takes air down into the chest, the windpipe
What does it do ? -Bronchus (plural bronchi)
It’s a tube which passes the air from the trachea into the lungs
What are the Bronchioles
They are smaller branches coming off bronchi
What are Alveoli?
Tiny sacs at the end of the bronchioles, where gas exchange takes place
What is Haemoglobin?
A protein found in every red blood cell,it carries oxygen
What is Gaseous Exchange?
It is the delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream and the removal of carbon dioxide from the tissues. The oxygenand carbon dioxide are being exchanged
What is Oxygen Debt
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down lactic acid
What is anaerobic exercise
Working at a high intensity level without oxygen for oxygen production
