Soc 21 Axes And Planes Of Movement Flashcards
What is a plane
Planes are theoretical divisions that divide
the human body into sections. There are
three planes of motion in the body.
Definition: an imaginary flat surface that
divides the body into sections.
What is the Sagittal plane
The Sagittal plane divides the body in
left to right, resulting in a left side and a
right side.
Movements: flexion and extension
(forward and backwards).
Definition: an imaginary line dividing the
body vertically into left and right sides
Example of Sagittal plane
Somersaults,chest pass, jumping, squatting
What is the Frontal plane
The Frontal plane divides the body in
front to back, resulting in a front and a
back.
Movements: adduction and abduction
(sidewards).
Definition: an imaginary line dividing the
body vertically from front to back.
Example of a Frontal Plane
Cartwheel,jumping jacks
What is a transverse plane
The Transverse plane divides the body
across the middle, giving a top and
bottom section.
Movements: rotation
Definition: an imaginary line dividing the
body horizontally from top to bottom.
Example of a Transverse plane
Hip rotation in a golf swing, discus throw, pivoting in netball
What are Axes
Our joints rotate around axes, and these
axes allow movement to take place in one
of the planes.
Definition: an imaginary straight line around
which something turns.
What is a Frontal Axis
Frontal axis runs from side to side.
Movement: flexion and extension.
Definition: imaginary line passing
horizontally through the body from left to
right, allows flexion and extension.
What is the Sagittal axis
Sagittal axis runs from front to back.
Movement: Adduction and abduction.
Definition: imaginary line passing
horizontally through the body from front
to back, allows adduction and abduction
What is the Vertical Axis
Vertical axis runs from top to bottom.
Movement: Rotation.
Definition: imaginary line passing
vertically through the body, allows
rotation of the body in an upright position.
