Soc16 The Structure Of Blood Vessels Flashcards
The 4 Main Characteristics of Arteries
•Arteries take Blood away from the Heart
•Arteries have Thick walls,High Pressure and carry Oxygenated Blood
•Lumen, the channel blood flows through can widen to allow more blood through when exercising reaching the working muscles
•One Artery in the body,Pulmonary Artery is different and carries de-oxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
The 4 Main Characteristics of Veins
•Veins carry Blood to the heart
• Veins have thinner walls and carry blood at a lower pressure
•Veins contain many valves which help de-oxygenated blood flow the right way to the heart
•The Pulmonary Vein, carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
The 4 Main Characteristics of Capillaries
•Capillares are microscopic vessels -just one cell thick
•At one end, capillaries carry oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles
•Al the other end, they carry deoxygenated blood into the veins, picking up waste products and taking them around the body to dispose of them.
•Capillaries are where gaseous exchange takes place
Name all 4 Valves
Semilunar Valves
Tricuspid Valve
Bicuspid Valve
Describe the Flow of Blood

Top Two Heart Chambers
Atriums
Bottom Two Chambers
Ventricles
How does the Heart pump Blood?
First Phase: Systolic Phase
Second Phase: Diastolic Phase
What are the 4 Main components of Blood
Red Blood Cells
White Blood Cells
Plasma
Platelets
What does a Red Blood Cell do
They transport oxygen around the body with haemoglobin carrying the oxygen
What does a White Blood Cell do
They produce antibodies to fight off disease or infection
What does a Platelet do
Tiny fragments to help the blood clot and stop bleeding
What does Plasma do
Plasma takes oxygen, nutrients, protein and hormones to the parts if the body that need it and disposes of waste products
What does the Immune system do
the structures and processes in your body that stop disease.
What is Thrombokinase
It is a substance involved in blood clotting.
