Soc16 The Structure Of Blood Vessels Flashcards

1
Q

The 4 Main Characteristics of Arteries

A

•Arteries take Blood away from the Heart
•Arteries have Thick walls,High Pressure and carry Oxygenated Blood
•Lumen, the channel blood flows through can widen to allow more blood through when exercising reaching the working muscles
•One Artery in the body,Pulmonary Artery is different and carries de-oxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs

Q

The 4 Main Characteristics of Veins

A

•Veins carry Blood to the heart
• Veins have thinner walls and carry blood at a lower pressure
•Veins contain many valves which help de-oxygenated blood flow the right way to the heart
•The Pulmonary Vein, carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart

Q

The 4 Main Characteristics of Capillaries

A

•Capillares are microscopic vessels -just one cell thick
•At one end, capillaries carry oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles
•Al the other end, they carry deoxygenated blood into the veins, picking up waste products and taking them around the body to dispose of them.
•Capillaries are where gaseous exchange takes place
