What is borborygmi?
rumbling, gurgling sounds of the GIT
Why does giving dogs chicken and rice help to manage diarrhoea?
has binding properties to give firmer stool
What do small intestine and large intestine linked diarrhoea appear as?
Large intestine:
- smaller amounts more often
- fresh blood coming through
- straining
- fewer issues with absorption and weight loss
Small intestine:
- larger amounts less frequently
- weight loss
- no straining
What is maldigestion and malabsorption?
Maldigestion – ingesta is not broken down enough to be absorbed
Malabsorption – the ingesta cannot be absorbed correctly
What is trypsin-like immunoreactivity test?
assesses pancreatic function
low TLI = points towards exocrine pancreatic insuffiency
What is folate?
bacteria in SI digests cobalamin into folate
small intestinal bacterial overgrowth will present as high folate
What is cobalamin?
Vitamin B-12 - used to form RBCs and DNA
Pancreas produces intrinsic factor to allow digestion of B-12
What method can be used to manage exocrine pancreatic insufficiency?
low-fat diet and pancreatic enzyme supplementation
can feed raw pancreases
