What is atresia?
absence or abnormal narrowing of an opening or passage in the body => blockage
What is a hernia?
condition in which part of an organ is displaced and protrudes through the wall of the cavity containing it
What is atresia ani?
developmental defect of the anal opening or terminal rectum
What is a faecaloma/faecalith?
mass of hardened faeces
What is stenosis?
narrowing or constriction of the diameter of a bodily passage or orifice
What is the inguinal canal?
slit like flat space between the external oblique muscles and the pelvic tendon of the external oblique aponeurosis
What is a cryptorchid?
animal with a retained testicle
What are the risks associated with cryptorchids?
reduced fertility
increased risk of testicular cancer
risk of torsion and trauma
What is atresia coli?
incomplete section of colon or large bowel
What is an inguinal/scrotal hernia?
Portion of abdominal contents protrudes through weak point or tear in the abdominal wall near the inguinal canal or extends into scrotum
What is an umbilical hernia?
parts of intestines or abdominal tissue pushes through weak spot near the umbilicus
What is a diaphragmatic hernia?
abnormal opening of diaphragm allows abdominal contents to move into chest cavity
What is a perineal hernia?
protrusion of abdominal or pelvic organs through a weakness or defect in the muscles of the pelvic floor into the perineal region
