By sealing off the buccal cavity from the oropharynx from the common pharynx, seal is made by tongue against soft palate and soft palate against epiglottis

Pathological accumulation of saliva in the ducts or the capsule of the glands due to blockage.
A mucocele under the tongue is a ranula.
