Intro to clinical biochemistry Flashcards
What things can be assessed in clinical biochemistry when there are problems in normal metabolism?
Substrates/products
Enzymes
Hormones
Why are the substrates assessed in clinical biochemistry related to metabolism different in ruminants compared to mono-gastrics?
Ruminants utilise metabolic products from bacteria
what are the categories of liver enzymes?
hepatocellular
cholestatic
what hepatocellular liver enzymes?
contains in hepatocyte
leak out if there is damage
indicate liver damage if increase in circulation
e.g., AST and ALT
What are cholestatic liver enzymes?
found on cell membrane of cell that line bile ducts
increased conc in blood if there is an issue with flow of bile through liver
e.g., ALKP and GGT
