Body wall and peritoneum Flashcards
What is a laparotomy?
surgical incision into abdominal cavity - flank
What is a laparoscopy?
fibre-optic instrument inserted through abdominal walls to view abdominal organs
What is coeliotomy?
surgical incision into abdominal cavity - midline
what is the paralumber fossa?
hollow area of the flank
what is the aponeurosis?
thin sheath of connective tissue that helps connect muscle to bone
What is the linea alba?
seam along ventral midline that extends from xiphoid process to the symphysis pelvis
What are the layers of the peritoneum?
parietal peritoneum
visceral peritoneum - lines abdominal organs
mesenteric peritoneum - forms mesentery
What are the 3 openings of the diaphragm?
aortic hiatus
oesophageal hiatus
caval opening
What muscles are found on the lateral abdominal wall and what direction do the fibres run?
What is the function of the muscles of the abdominal wall
abdominal press and expiration
compression of abdominal viscera
Describe the anatomy and function of the peritoneum
Serous membrane that lines the abdominal cavity
Sac between different section = peritoneal cavity - contain peritoneal fluid
Peritoneum can excrete and resorb fluid and resorb gas
Label the layers of the abdominal wall
Describe the anatomy of the rectus sheath
Found on ventral abdomen
Tendinous sheath that encloses the rectus abdominis muscle
formed by aponeuroses of other abdominal muscles
What is the name and function of the extra ligament found in the equine hip?
Ligamentum teres
Prevents excessive adduction and extension
Describe the anatomy of the linea alba
fibrous tissue
aponeurotic joining of L and R abdominal oblique and transversus muscles
From ziphoid process to pubis
includes umbilicus
what is the best location for abdominal incisions?
strongest point for abdominal incisions (also avoids vasculature and nerves)
What nerves innervate the abdominal wall?
ventral branches of thoracic and lumbar nerves (T13, L1, L2)
Where is the paravertebral nerve block given?
proximally (dorsal aspects of T13, L1 and L2)
or dorsally (ventral to lateral tips of L1, 2 and 4)
Describe the vasculature to the abdominal wall
Cranial region: internal thoracic artery and cranial epigastric artery
Diaphragm: phrenicoabdominal artery
Caudal region: caudal epigastric artery and external pudendal artery
