Sex determination Flashcards
Inheritance of sex
Of our 23 pairs of chromosomes, 22 pairs are autosomes, and one pair is a sex chromosome. (XX or XY)
What are gametes
An organism’s reproductive cell. They are also referred to as sex cells. Gametes only have one copy of each chromosome rather than two
The male’s gamete
The male’s gamete determines the sex of the baby as the male gender is the only gender that can carry an X or Y chromosome. If an X chromosome fertilises the egg, the offspring will be female otherwise it’ll be the male.
Family trees
It can be used to trace genetic characteristics and track inherited diseases using alleles. They show males and females and can be used to see if an individual is hetero or homozygous for particular alleles
