Separating mixtures Flashcards
Element
Substances made from only one type of atom
Compound
Substances made from two or more types of atoms bonded together
Mixture
Groups of atoms, elements and compounds that are mixed but not bonded
How to separate mixtures
They can be separated from each other without a chemical reaction. The 5 methods used are crystallisation, chromatography, filtration, simple and fractional distillation
Filtration
Used for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid e.g. sand from water
Crystallisation
Used so separate soluble solids from a liquid e.g. salt from water
Simple distillation
Used to separate a liquid from a solution
Solute
A solid that can dissolve in a solvent e.g. salt
Solvent
A substance that can dissolve a solute e.g. water
Solution
The mixture formed when a solvent dissolves a solute e.g. salt in water
