How Does The Nervous System Help Us Respond To Changes Flashcards
What are receptors
Receptors are specialised groups of cells (tissue) that can sense changes in the environment. They are linked to sensory neurons and distribution of these receptors are based on how much information a certain body part gets from the environment.
Types of receptors
Chemical receptors (e.g. taste)
Pain receptors
Pressure receptors
Light receptors
Stretch receptors
Temperature receptors
Balance receptors
Parts of a neurone
Nucleus (stores DNA/genetic information)
Cytoplasm (Where chemical reactions take place)
Axon (Transmits nerve impulses)
Branched endings(To make connections to other neurones and form synapses)
Fatty sheath(Insulates the axon and increases the speed of nerve impulses)
Types of neurones
Sensory neurones-connect our receptors to relay neurones in the spinal cord
Relay neurones-Found in our spinal cord and they connect sensory neurones and motor neurones
Motor neurones-connecto tour relay neurones to an effector
Effector
A gland or a muscle
CNS
Our central nervous system includes our brain, spinal cord, relay neurones and the very end of sensory and motor neurones
PNS
Our peripheral nervous system is any other nervous system outside our CNS and includes sensoey and motor neurones
