Catalysts Flashcards
What are catalysts
These are substances that speed up a reaction without being used up in the reaction themselves. They provide an alternative pathway for the reaction with a lower activation energy. Catalysts never produce more product, they just produce the same amount more quickly.
Industrial catalysts
Many catalysts are transition metals, for example, nickel, iron and platinum
Biological catalysts
An enzyme is a biological catalyst. They work within a narrow range of pH and temperature. They are used in everyday products such as yeast and washing up liquid
Strengths
Products can be made more quickly saving energy, time and money
They are reusable
They reduce the need for high temperatures, saving fuel and pollution
Weakness
Catalysts are expensive
