Alkanes and Alkenes Flashcards
1
Q
What are alkanes
A
Alkanes are a homologous series of hydrocarbons. This means that they have similar chemical properties to each other, and they have trends in their physical properties. For example, as the chain length increases, so does the boiling point. They are also saturated and less reactive than Alkenes.
2
Q
Alkane general formula
A
Cn H(2n+2) For example ethane (2) is C2H6
3
Q
What are Alkenes
A
Alkenes are a homologous series of hydrocarbons with a carbon double bond. They are unsaturated so they ae more reactive than alkanes
4
Q
Alkene general formula
A
Cn H2n for example ethene (2) is C2H4
