Hormones Flashcards
What are hormones
They are chemical messangers released form endocrine glands and travel in our blood stream to their target organ. Target organs are xovered in receptors for the hormones to bind to
Endocrine glands
They specifically release hormones directly into the blood stream
Hormones vs Nerves
Hormones are slower compared to nerves as they have to travel through the blood stream hoewrer they last for a longer time than nerves
Thyroid gland
Releases the hormone Thyroxine-the main hormone that controls chemical reactions in the body. If a child does not have enough thyroxine, then growth can be affected
Pancreas
The pancreas produces insulin-a hromone that regulates blood sugar levels
Adrenal glands
The adrenal glends release adrenaline-the hormone that increases heart rate and rate of respiration
Pituitary glands
The pituitary gland produces many hormones that control and regulate the other glands (Master gland)
Testes
The testes release testosterone- a hormone that causes changes during puberty and a development in muscle tissue
Ovaries
The ovaries release oestrogen and progesterone- hormones that cause changes during puberty such as the starting of the menstrual cycle.
