Rest of B6 pt.1 Flashcards
What is survival of the fittest
The continued existence of organisms that are best adapted to their environments, with the extinction of others
What is natural selection
The process where organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
What is variation
This describes diversity in the genetic make-up of a species. They come from mutations.
What is adaptation
The process by which a species becomes fitted to its environment
How can changes in the genotype occur?
Evolution is the process by which populations of organisms change over generations. Genetic variations support these changes. Charles Darwin came up with the theory of evolution
What is population
A group of organisms of one species that interbreed and live in the same place at the same time
What is community
A group of interacting organisms coexisting in a particular area and time
What is competition
An interaction between organisms or species in which both require a resource which is in limited supply e.g. competition for sunlight and water in plants
What is a niche?
The niche of an organism is the functional role it plays within an ecosystem
What is artificial selection/selectively breeding?
This is how humans choose organisms with desirable traits and selectively breed them them to produce offspring with the desirable traits
