How Does The Nervous System Help Us Respond To Changes Pt2 Flashcards
What is a reflex
A reflex is an involuntary response to avoid harm/protect us. The only part of our CNS involves is the spinal cord. This increases the speed as we dont need to think about it
What happens in a synapse
The impulse travels to the end of a neuron and then neurotransmitters are released into the synapse. Theybtravel across the synapse and interact with receptors at the post-synaptic cleft. When enough receptors are filled, the impulse continues down the neuron
Rooting reflex
Stimulus: Gently touching a baby’s cheek
Response: It turns its head towards your finger
Sucking reflex
Stimulus: Placing a nipple or a similar shaped object in a baby’s mouth
Response: It will cause it to suck
Swallowing reflex
Stimulus: The presence of liquid such as milk in a baby’s mouth
Response: It leads to swallowing
What is an advantage of simple reflexes
Because it is a reflex , the baby does it naturally and doesnt need any thinking power to do it making the whole process easier.
Reflexes in action
Stimulus >Receptor>Sensory neurone>Relay neurone>Motor neurone>Effecor>Response
What is the consequence of a broken spine
Impulses wouldnt be able to travel so muscles dont get a response to recat
What is the consequence of a degenerated motor neurone
They would feel the pain but with no motor neurone , they wouldn’t be able to use their reflexes and move
What is the consequence of a lack of neurotransmitter at a synapse
The response would be much slower and smaller (delayed reaction)
What is the consequence of excess neurotransmitter at a synapse?
Exaggerated respons and a higher amout of pain. Also multiple reactions
