STREPSIADES Heracles! What are these monsters?
ΣΤΡΕΨ. ὦ Ἡράκλεις, τίνα ταῦτα τὰ θηρία;
STUDENT Hey you! Why were you amazed?
ΜΑΘ. οὗτος, διὰ τί ἐθαύμασας;
Why did you yell again?
διὰ τί αὖθις ἐβόησας;
Are you amazed at these students?
ἆρα τοὺς μαθητὰς τούτους θαυμάζεις;
STR. Yes by, Zeus, I amazed.
But are these ones doing, who are looking into the ground?
ἀλλὰ τί ποιοῦσιν οὗτοι οἱ εἰς τὴν γῆν βλέποντες;
STU. They are investigating subterranean phenomena.
ΜΑΘ.
STR. Then they are looking for truffles.
Don’t worry about it any more, monsters:
μὴ νῦν τοῦτό γ’ ἔτι φροντίζετε, ὦ θηρία·
I know where there are some lovely big ones.
But who’s this here?
ἀλλὰ τίς οὑτοσί;
Why is his bottom looking towards the sky?
διὰ τί ὁ πρωκτὸς εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν βλέπει;
STU. Because his bottom is studying astronomy.
ΜΑΘ.
STR. Look! What’s this?
ΣΤΡΕΨ. (points to one of the strange devices) ἰδού· τί δ’ ἐστὶ τοῦτο;
Tell me (lit. “teach me”)
STU. This is astronomy.
ΜΑΘ.
STR. And what’s this?
ΣΤΡΕΨ. (points to another device) τοῦτο δὲ τί;
STU. Geometry.
ΜΑΘ.
STR. And what use is this?
ΣΤΕΨ. καὶ εἰς τί χρήσιμον αὕτη;
Teach me.
STU. With this we measure the land.
ΜΑΘ.
This is a map of the world.
(picks up a map)
Do you see?
(points at the map) ὁρᾷς;
This is Athens.
STR. What are you saying?
ΣΤΡΕΨ. (in disbelief) τί σὺ λέγεις;
I don’t believe [you], since I don’t see any one of the jurors sitting.
And where is my deme?
ποῦ δ’ ἐσθ’ ὁ ἐμὸς δῆμος;
STU. It’s here.
ΜΑΘ. (points at the map) ἐνταῦθα ἔνεστιν.
Do you see Euboea?
τὴν δ’ Εὔβοιαν ὁρᾷς;
STR. I see [it]. But where does Sparta happen to be?
ΣΤΡΕΨ. ὁρῶ. ἀλλ’ ἡ Λακεδαίμων ποῦ τυγχάνει οὖσα;
STU. Where? Here.
ΜΑΘ.
STR. Alas! Go away, go away!
(taken aback) παπαῖ.
How near us Sparta is.
But why don’t you drag this away from us a very long way?
ἀλλὰ διὰ τί οὐκ ἀπάγεις ταύτην ἀφ’ ἡμῶν πόρρω πάνυ;
STU. But that’s impossible.
ΜΑΘ.
STR. By Zeus, you’ll regret it then.
But tell me, who’s this in the basket?
(he looks up and sees Socrates hanging in a basket) ἀλλ’ εἰπέ μοι, τίς οὗτος ὁ ἐπὶ τῆς κρεμάθρας ὤν;
STU. Himself.
ΜΑΘ.
STR. Who’s Himself?
ΣΤΡΕΨ. τίς αὐτός;
STU. Socrates.
ΜΑΘ.
