Section 1G.a. Greek to English Flashcards
διὰ τί;
why?
νῦν
now
ΚΥΒ. (suddenly realizing the danger) ἀλλὰ ἆρά ἐστι σῶον τὸ ἡμέτερον πλοῖον, σῶοι δὲ καὶ ἡμεῖς;
CAPTAIN. But is our ship safe, and we safe as well?
διὰ τί ἐγὼ οὐ καταβαίνω καὶ περισκοπῶ ἀκριβῶς;
Why don’t I go down below and look around carefully?
For I [am] the captain: so it [is] my job, and our safety [depends] on me.
(The captain goes down and looks around.)
(But Dikaiopolis remains above.)
ΔΙΚ.
DIK. Now, O Poseidon, save us [bring us safely] into the harbor.
For we always make sacrifices to you, and you always save people from the sea.
We are now dying badly:
for our ship is clearly sinking into the sea, …
our life-boat is clearly drifting away, …
and our safety [is] not assured.
(The captain comes up.)
ΚΥΒ. (with relief) σιώπα, ὦ Δικαιόπολι.
CAPTAIN Be quiet, Dikaioplis.
