DIKAIOPOLIS O Zeus! Terrible is the danger in Salamis and great.
ἰδού, ὦ ῥαψῳδέ· ἀλλὰ ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ ανήρ;
Look rhapsode: but where is the man?
οὐ γὰρ ὁρῶ ἐκεῖνον τὸν ἄνδρα.
For I cannot see the man.
ΝΑΥ. ἰδού, “πτώσει” οὗτος ὁ ῥαψῳδὸς ἐν τῇ νηί, “ὥσπερ Ἀχαιὸς ὑφ’ Ἕκτορι.”
SAILOR Look, this rhapsode “is cowering” in the ship “like an Achaean at Hector’s mercy.”
φοβεῖται γὰρ τοὺς Λακεδαιμονίους.
He’s afraid of the Spartans.
ΔΙΚ. εἰπέ μοι, ὦ ῥαψῳδέ, τί ποιεῖς;
DIK. Tell me, rhapsode, what are you doing?
τίς φόβος λαμβάνει σε;
What fear takes hold of you?
σὺ γὰρ στρατηγὸς εἶ τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἄριστος.
For you are the best general of the Greeks.
μὴ ποίει τοῦτο μηδὲ φοβοῦ τοὺς Λακεδαιμονίους τούτους.
Don’t do this and don’t be afraid of these Spartans.
ἰδού, ἐγγὺς τοῦ λιμένος ἐσμὲν ἤδη.
Look, we are already near the harbor.
μὴ οὖν φοβοῦ.
So don’t be afraid.
ΡΑΨ. (still shaking with fear) τί φής; ἆρα ἀφικνοῦνται οἱ Λακεδαιμόνιοι;
RHAPSODE What are you saying? Are the Spartans arriving?
φοβοῦμαι γὰρ τοὺς Λακεδαιμονίους ἔγωγε.
I am afraid of the Spartans, I am.
τοὺς γὰρ ναύτας λαμβάνουσιν ἐκεῖνοι καὶ ἀποκτείνουσιν.
For those men take sailors and kill them.
ΝΑΥ. ἀλλὰ οὐδεμία ναῦς ἔρχεται, ὦ τᾶν, καὶ δῆλον ὅτι οὐκ ἀφικνεῖται Λακεδαιμόνιος οὐδείς, οὐδὲ λαμβάνει οὐδένα, οὐδὲ ἀποκτείνει οὔτε ἡμᾶς οὔτε ὑμᾶς.
SAILOR But no ship is arriving, my friend, and it is clear that not one of the Spartans is arriving, nor taking anybody, nor killing us or you (pl.)
σὺ δὲ οὐ μιμνήσκῃ τοὺς τοῦ Περικλέους λογους;
Do you not remember the words of Pericles?
ΡΑΨ. τίνες οἱ λόγοι; λέγε μοι· οὐ γὰρ μιμνήσκομαι.
RHAP. What are the words? Tell me: for I do not remember.
ΝΑΥ. ἄκουε οὖν τί λέγει ὁ Περικλῆς ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ περὶ τοῦ πολέμου καὶ τῶν ναυτικῶν·
SAILOR Listen then to what Pericles says in the ecclesia (assembly) about war and about nautical matters:
“μὴ φοβεῖσθε, ὦ ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι, τοὺς Λακεδαιμονίους.
“Do not be afraid, Athenians, of the Spartans.
ἐκεῖνοι μὲν γὰρ κρατοῦσι κατὰ γὴν, ἡμεῖς δὲ κατὰ θάλατταν.
For those men have supremacy on land, we [have supremacy] at sea.
ἀλλὰ καὶ ἡμεῖς ἔχομεν ἐμπειρίαν τινὰ κατὰ γῆν, ἐκεῖνοι δὲ οὐδεμίαν ἔχουσιν εἰς τὰ ναυτικὰ ἐμπειρίαν.
But we too have some experience on land, while they have no experience in nautical matters.
καὶ δὴ καὶ οὐ ῥᾳδίως μανθάνουσιν οἱ Λακεδαιμόνιοι τὰ ναυτικά, εὖ οἶδα ὅτι, …
And moreover, the Spartans to not easily learn nautical matters, I know that well,
ἐπειδὴ γεωργοί εἰσι καὶ οὐ θαλάττιοι.
since they are farmers and not seafarers.
τὸ δὲ ναυτικὸν τέχνη ἐστί·
Nautical [expertise] is a skill:
καὶ ταύτην μανθάνουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι διὰ τὴν μελετήν, ὥσπερ καὶ τὰς ἄλλας τέχνας, ἄλλως δε οὐδαμῶς.
and this ‘skill’ men learn through practice, as they do other skills, and no other way.
ὑμεῖς γὰρ δὴ εὖ ἴστε ὅτι οὐ ῥᾳδίως, ἀλλὰ χαλεπῶς καὶ μετὰ πολλῆς μελετῆς, μανθάνετε ταύτην τὴν τέχνην.
For you know well that not easily, but with difficulty and much practice, do you learn this skill.
— ‘αλλὰ οἱ Λακεδαιμόνιοι’ — φησί τίς ὑμῶν — ‘ἆρα οὐ μελετῶσιν;’
‘But the Spartans,’ one of you says, ‘do they not practice?’
— ἐγὼ δε ἀποκρίνομαι ‘οὔκ, ἀλλὰ ἡμεῖς, ἐπειδὴ κρατοῦμεν κατὰ θάλατταν, κωλύομεν.’”
I reply, ‘NO, but we, since we have supremacy at sea, are preventing them.’”
ΔΙΚ. (comfortingly) καὶ μὴν ὁρᾶτε τὸν λιμένα.
DIK. And now see the harbor!
ὅσαι αἱ λαμπάδες, ὅσαι αἱ νῆες, ὅσος ὁ θόρυβος, ὅσοι οἱ ἄνδρες.
How many torches [there are], how many warships, how much confusion, how many men!
ἰδού· ὥσπερ γὰρ μύρμηκες, οὕτω συνέρχονται ἐκεῖνοι οἱ ναῦται εἰς τὸν λιμένα.
Look! Like ants, those sailors are swarming into the harbor.
μέγα γὰρ ἡμῖν τὸ πλῆθος τὸ τῶν τε νεῶν καὶ τῶν τριηράρχων.
Great is the number both of men and of trierarchs.
