Who knocked at the door?
τίς ἔκοψε τὴν θύραν;
Who shouted?
τίς ἐβοησεν;
STR. I myself knocked at the door and I shouted.
ΣΤΡΕΨ. ἔγωγε ἔκοψα τὴν θύραν καὶ ἐβόησα.
STU. Who are you that did that?
ΜΑΘ. τίς ὢν σὺ τοῦτο ἐποίησας;
Some ignoramus, I know well.
ἀμαθής τις, εὖ οἶδα.
STR. Strepsiades, from the deme Kikynna.
ΣΤΡΕΨ. Στρεψιάδης Κικυννόθεν.
STU. Go to hell again.
ΜΑΘ. εἰς κόρακας αὖθις. (goes back to the phrontisterion).
STR. Alas! What shall I do?
ΣΤΡΕΨ. οἴμοι, τί ποιήσω;
But, I’ll knock again.
ἀλλ’ αὖθις κόψω.
(He knocks on the door again.)
(αὖθις κόπτει τὴν θύραν)
STU. Who’s that knocking?
ΜΑΘ. τίς ὁ κόπτων;
Why did this fellow not stop knocking, when I told him to?
διὰ τί οὗτος οὐκ ἐπαύσατο κόπτων ὁ ἄνθρωπος, ἐπεὶ ἐκέλευσα ἐγώ;
Why are you knocking again?
διὰ τί σὺ πάλιν κόπτεις;
What do you have in mind?
τί ἐν νῷ ἔχεις;
You’ve knocked away my thought, doing that.
τὴν γὰρ ἐμὴν φροντίδα ἀπέκοψας, ποιῶν τοῦτο.
STR. But I just stopped, my dear fellow.
ΣΤΡΕΨ. ἀλλ’ ἄρτι ἐπαυσάμην, ὦ ’γαθέ.
