STREPSIADES Alas, alas! O king Zeus!
τὸ χρῆμα τῶν νυκτῶν, ὅσον ἐστι·
The length of the nights — how great it is!
καὶ οὐδέπω ἡμέρα γίγνεται.
Day is not yet coming.
(turns round as he hears some loud snores) ἰδού, βαθέως καθεύδει ὁ υἱὸς καὶ οὐ παύεται καθεύδων.
See! My son is sleeping deeply and does not cease sleeping.
(lies down again to try to sleep) οἴμοι τάλας.
Alas unhappy me!
ἀλλ’ ὕπνος βαθὺς οὐδέπω μ’ ἔχει.
Deep sleep does not yet come to (lit. “hold”) me.
ἄγρυπνος δ’ εἰμὶ ὁ δυστυχής.
I, unfortunate (as I am), am sleepless.
ἄγρυπνον δ’ ὄντα με δάκνει τὰ χρέα βαρέα ὄντα.
While I am sleepless, my debts, which are heavy, worry me.
