Sarcophagidae (2) Flashcards
What are the hosts?
Any animal
Describe adults
Twice the size of house fly
Describe third instars
Larger than housefly maggots
Explain the life cycle
More than 3000 species - each with preferred tissue decomposition
stage for deposit of eggs or larvae
Sarcophagids lay 1st stage larvae in sores, wounds, decomposing areas, necrotic areas, wool soiled with urine/feces
Larvae develop to 3rd stage - leave host
Pupate in soil - overwintering stage
Adult - nonparasitic
What are the sites of infestation?
Skin (decomposing wounds)
Soiled wool
Wherever there is blood or other body secretions that attract female flies to lay 1st instars
Describe the Pathogenesis
Bacterial growth
Odors from decomposing tissues - attract flies
Wet wool (bacteria - odors) on sheep - attract flies - Sheep become restless, kick/bite at flies
Lose condition, even die
How do you diagnose?
Fly identification
Based on clinical signs
Recognize maggots
How do you treat and prevent?
Treat wounds
Avoid “decomposition” conditions
Prevent situations that attract flies
- Sanitation - Improved husbandry - Tail docking
What is the common name?
Flesh flies
