Explain the life cycle
Eggs pass in feces into water
Snail ingests eggs, develop to miracidia and then cercariae
Cercariae emerge from snail which infect crustaceans, or snails ingested by crustaceans
Metacercariae encyst in crustaceans
Lizard, toad, gecko, or skink ingests crustacean with metacercariae
Cat becomes infected by ingesting IH or PH (lizard)
Develop to juvenile flukes, migrate to bile ducts to develop to adults
PPP: 2-3 months

Endemic in St. Kitts/Florida
Cause hyperplasia of bile ducts
Nonpathogenic
Heavy infections - results in “lizard poisoning”
What are the clinical signs?
Jaundice (=icterus)
Diarrhea
Vomitting
Lethargy
Enlarged palpable liver
Distended abdomen
Emaciation
Death
How do you diagnose?
Eggs in fecal flotation
How do you treat and prevent?
Praziquantel used
Surgery
