Safety Responses Flashcards
SpO2 under 90% with order to titrate to maintain SpO2>90
We can administer supplemental oxyegen
Diaphragm breathing works but not first choice
Response to Orthostatic Hypotension
Transfer to the mat and elevate legs in supine to bring blood to head
What falls under airborne precautions
Rubeola (measles), Tuberculosis, Varicella (Chicken Pox), SARS, Specifically disseminated herpes zoster b/c spreaded to other organs
Particles in air diff than droplet
What are requirements for airborne safety precaution
Private room with negative air pressure, closed door.
N95 or higher
Patients who have same illness together if no room
Patient should also wear surgical mask
What falls under droplet precautions
Staph and streps, rubella (german measles), Pneumonia pertussis (whooping cough), influenza/flu, mumps, diphtheria, meningitis, mumps, sepsis, adenovirus, rhinovirus, parovirus, epiglottis, plague, pharygneal, scarlet fever
What are requirements for droplet precaution
Wear a mask within 3-6 feet (covid) because only close contact for sneezing, coughing, etc, and patient should too
Private room, door can be open but keep separated and place others with same illness if no space
Wear a gown if close
What falls under contact precautions
GI, respiratory, skin, wound infections, stool, incontinence, e coli, herpes simplex virus, scabies, ulcers, major staph/streo, major drainage, Hep A, Diarrhea, Cdiff, norovirus, rotavirus, conjunctivitis, lice
What are the requirements for contact precaution
Don gloves, gown upon entering, Doff before leaving. Place with other patients if no room, but private room preferred
Hand hygiene,
Hand hygeine
Alcoho- based hand sanitizer is usually best
Use soap and water when visibly dirty, or exposure to spores
Wash hands before and after gloves
What is a positive pressure room
Air flows from higher pressure in the room to outside of room to prevent pathologic airborne particles or droplets from going into the room (e.g for immunocompromised)
What is a negative pressure room
Air flows from outside of room (higher) into room (lower) so that patient with illness that has airborne or droplet particles does not send them outside of room (e.g negative pressure room for tuberculosis pt)
Name two circumstances where left side lying should occur
GERD and pregnancy (due to stomach placement and IVC placement)
Flexed position (trunk lean)
Is optimal for diaphragm work e.g COPD
Pulmonary embolism
Chesty pain, cyanosis, dyspnea
Medical emergency !
BLS
- Scan scene
- Check responsiveness
- Help + activate MS
- Get AED if can
For kids, if sudden collapse do 5 cycles of CPR before AED
100-120 compressions/min
2 inches unless infant (1.5 inches)
two fingers for inants
30:2 vs 15:2 for infants
Ventilations with advanced airway 1 breath every 6 sec 10 in a mun
Unless trained, than only compressions no CPR
and if advances airway, just compressions
Seizure considerations
Typically, unnecessary to call emergency medical system immediately unless seizure persists for more than five minutes or a super severe situation. Remove things in the environment that can be harmful. Do not restrain. Absolutely do not put anything in the mouth.
Appendiciits response
When appendicitis is suspected because of a patient’s symptoms, a physician should be notified and the patient should lie down and be as still as possible.
