Other Modalities Flashcards
Effleurage
light stroke For mechanical and relfex indicated for
Relaxation and blood flow
Friction
Fro inflammation or overuse injuries
Deep circular motion
to break up spasms, or adhesions
could be transverse friction which is side to side
Petrissage
squeezing and rolling muscle under therapist hands
for adhesions and circulation
Tapotoment
Rapid hitting movements like cupping, tapping etc.
to stimulate nerve endings or circulation
Vibration
for relaxation
Lumbar traction
Supine or prone (Usually supine unless other modalities needed)
Flexed position better for posterior structures (facet, intervertebral STENOSIS
Extension position better for anterior structures (including disc spaces) DISC HERNIATION
Static traction if sx are exaggerated by movement
Intermittent for pt that cant tolerate
Use split traction table
NO MORE THAN 30 lb in first section
25% bodyweight for soft structures
50 % of bw for full separation
Cervical tractioin
Supine usually (takes gravity out), sometimes sitting
Anterior flex for post structures (facet and intervertebral)
ext for ant structures (disc)
upper cervical, 0-5 degrees flexion
mid:10-20 degrees
lower: 25-35 degrees
No more than 10 lbs in initial session
7-10 lbs for soft tissue
13-20 for real distraction
Notice less than lumbar
How long for traction
10-30 min
Usually 10 min or less though*
After 3 visits
Reassess for traction
