Cranial Nerve I
Olfactory
Smell test with familiar odor
Cranial Nerve II
Optic
Vision. Test visual fields, acuity, with chart/diagram
Cranial Nerve III
Oculomotor
Does eye movement Up, down, and medially. Eye tracking with object
head movement compensation
Cranial Nerve IV
Trochlear
Does inward and downward gaze
Test with eye tracking of object and look out for head movement compensation
Cranial Nerve V
Trigeminal
Sensory to all of the face + Jaw clenching (muscles of mastication)
Corneal reflex test
Sensation (sharp or dull)
Jaw clench
CN VI
Abducens
Lateral gaze. Look for tracking and watch out for head rotation compensation
Consider Strabismus, esotropia
CN VII
Facial
Motor for most of face. Other part of corneal reflex b/c closes eyes
Mimic smile test, facial expression .
Also sensation to anterior tongue
CN VIII
Vestibulocochlear
Vestibular and hearing
Hearing test, or balance test
CN IX
Glossopharyngeal
Motor to throat muscles (pharnyx), autonomic to Parotid Gland (saliva)
Test w/ Gag Reflex, ability to swallow
Sensory to posterior tongue, pharnyx
CN X
Vagus Nerve
Autonomic: Thoracic and abdominal viscera Nervous system
Motor to throat muscles
General sensation in throat, taste in tongue,
Say Ahhh and Gag Reflex (important nerve that’s why doc checks it)
CN XI
Accessory Nerve
Motor to SCM, and trapezius
Resisted shoulder shrug
CN XII
Hypoglossal
Protrusion of tongue b/c does motor to tongue
