What must a driver do when not terminating on a platform?
Detrain passengers prior to the move.
Terminating in a platform procedure
Drive to platform
Cut out & secure leading cab
Walk along platform to other end
Cut in to the rear (now the leading cab)
Driver is now ready for return trip.
Terminating on a single line with a walking path
Drive to walking path with 6 - car mark
(May need to diverge if path is on opposite side)
Cut out & secure cab
Walk to other end along the path
Cut into rear (now leading cab)
Move train once points are ready
Terminating without a walking path in a 3 car train?
Drive to terminating point
Cut out & secure cab
Walk inside saloon to other end
Cut in cab, drive back in opp direction to platform or wherever..
Terminating with a fixed signal (Dwarf)
Dwarf may be mounted on the platform, overhead infrastructure or on the ground.
Dwarf signal is the authority to return.
Terminating with a fixed signal (home)
A home signal could be used as the authority to return.
When can we terminate with a hand signal ?
When a fixed signal is not provided or is defective or not applicable to the track section
When do we Terminate with written authority ?
When on ATC arriving in a crossing loop but required to return into single line at the rear.
Terminating at VPK DOWN
- ARR @ P2
- drive out b/y DWARF with a CE in rear
- push back to P1
Terminating at VPK UP
ARR @ P1

Terminating without a walking path in a 6 car train. What is required?
Must have competent worker
Must use bell codes/ cab intercom or mobile
2 bells- proceed
3 bells- set back
Series of bells- EMY STOP
Drivers must repeat bells/ messages back for clarity
Push out - Drive back in a 6 car train?
-At platform, driver changes ends
-Competent worker boards leading cab and instructs driver to proceed
-Driver REVERSES slowly
-Train is stopped once clear of points
- Driver can now drive forward to platform etc.
Drive out - Push back? And where is this normally done?
We do this at VPK
Bell codes used etc.
-CW enters trailing cab at platform
- train driven to terminating point (CW instructs driver to stop once clear of points
- Reverse train
- CW instructs when to stop (at stopping mark on platform etc.)
- Driver can now ‘change ends’ or cut out and secure cab to be relieved at other end.
Drive Both ways when terminating a 6 car train?
Can be done when CW is a qualified driver
- 2nd driver boards trailing cab at platform
- Train driven to terminating point
(2nd driver can alert 1st driver to stop when clear of points if terminating point is unclear)
- 1st driver cuts out and then 2 bell codes to 2nd driver to proceed
- 2nd driver cuts in and drives back normally once points are ready for return.
Terminating @ CHL UP or DOWN
CHANGE ENDS from ANY PLATFORM to go anywhere using applicable proceed aspect to depart
(Except UP Hurstbridge - need to move train to bi- directional track before heading to Plat 2. See image pink highlighted area)
Note: there are setback Dwarfs and Home Signal CHL117 that can be used to change plat’s
(There are no walking paths)
DOWN Terminating @ BLY
Move 1:
ARR pl 3 or 4
PUSH OUT to sig. 337 (w C/E)
DRIVE back to pl 2
Move 2:
ARR @ pl 3 or 4
DRIVE to BLS
DRIVE to pl 1
Terminating @ BLY on the UP
Move 1:
- ARR from Centre or Up line
- pl 2 CH/ends
- return to C line
Move 2:
- ARR pl 1, push to dwarf 370
- DRIVE to pl 2, CH/ends
- PUSH to 337 (h/s)
- DRIVE to pl 4
How are Lay by sidings accessed?
From platforms 10, 11 and road 10a SSS
Who operates the points at MSS & NMS?
A shunting driver must ensure points are set for a vacant road.
WHERE THERE ARE HAND OPERATED WSA POINTS
When there is failure of OTHER points a CW is appointed to operate points.
A driver may be asked to fit a hand locking bar.
(MSS except roads 1 & 2)
How are NMS accessed?
Located off the Down Broadmeadows suburban line,
Platform 6 @ NME
Receive an illuminated letter ‘K’
How are Macaulay Stabling sidings accessed?
From platform 2 or 4 at NME
receive a ‘U’ route indicator to the DOWN UFD line
What must a driver do before entering NMS & MSS?
Set WSA hand operated points to a vacant road.
How are MSS accessed by night on foot?
The taxi point is located on Arden St where it intersects with Moonee Ponds Creek and the Railway.
What does a RED and GREEN door light indicate at the MSS Light Repair Centre?
RED = Doors are NOT fully open
GREEN = doors are OPEN fully
- If conflicting indicators assume doors are not fully open, STOP the train and contact WSCP @ Metrol
How many cars fit into MSS Light Repair Centre ?
A three car train can be stabled within the MLRC
And another 3 car outside
Total - one 6 car
or 2 x 3 cars
How do you open/ close doors at the MLRC?
Push the yellow button at the West End
(Doors must be closed if only 3 cars are being stabled)
How can you access VPK siding ‘A’ ?
- Pl 1
- take Home Signal VPK104 with illuminated ‘S’ into the siding
What route indicators are used on pl’s 3 & 4 @ BLY and where does each one take you?
BH - (Box Hill) for Down Belgrave, Lilydale & Alamein
GW - (Glen Waverley) for Glen Waverley & Burnley Sidings
Which platform does an Up Glen Waverley train access the Burnley Local line from?
Platform 1
How are Caution Orders Issued within the Metrol Controlled areas?
They are either Handed OR Transmitted
Who operates the points when there is point failure @ VPK, CHL, BLY & SKN?
The signaller (METROL) or a competent Employee
At which locations may a driver be asked to operate points?
- when there are hand operated points, a driver must ensure they are set for a vacant road (NMS MSS)
- MYD driver may be asked to put point machine to ‘HAND’ & manually op. Under instructions (RRLC)
- Drivers may be asked to fit HLB’s @
SSS (plus inform direction of points)
LAYBYS
MSS - @ NME WASH CCW hand points will automatically be set to enter wash
How do we terminate at South Kensington?
(DOWN ONLY)
- ARR Pl 2
- CH/ends on plat
- Receive Proceed ASP with ‘M’ route indicator
