3 POSITION SIGNALS Flashcards
What information does a driver get with 3 position signaling?
Points - set or not
Track section ahead, - clear or occupied
Speed - normal/ medium
Next signal - stop or proceed
What does a greenlight inform the driver about the next signal ahead?
Next signal will be a another proceed aspect
What does a yellow light inform the driver about the next signal ahead?
Next signal will be at stop
What does a medium Speed aspect tell us
Medium Speed aspects are used where:
- there are junctions or diverging running lines
- Speed of the train is to be reduced to medium due to short track sections
What type of signal are three position signals
LIGHT type
What is A light
B light and
C light?
A - top
B - bottom
C - on Home Signals
What are the classes of signals three position?
Home
automatic
dwarf
What do you three position home Signals protect ?
Stations
signal boxes,
sidings
level crossings
junctions
Why is a tramway square protected by Home signals?
Because the power in the overhead has to be switched over to accommodate the different voltagei used by different vehicles
(Tram 600 v
Train 1500 v)
What is the purpose of automatic signals?
Automatic signals purpose is to expedite the passage of trains by dividing a long section of track into shorter sections
What is the purpose of a home signal and how are they controlled
Home protect sections of track, and are regulated by signallers/ area controllers to Regulate trains and protect conflicting movements
Who controls dwarf signals?
Signalers
What do dwarf signals control train movements from?
Running line to running line
running line to siding
siding to running line
siding to siding
Which signals are absolute
Home, dwarf, and disc
(Meaning they require permission from signaller to pass when at stop)
Which signals are permissive
Automatic
Drivers can self authorize to pass the signal at stop R1S3
What colors do home and automatic signals display?
🔴 red
🟡 yellow
🟢 green
What colors do dwarf signals display?
🔴
🟣
🔵
🟢
🟡
Can an automatic signal display a low speed caution?
No
What is a marker light?
It’s just a smaller light that Only ever displays the color red.

🟡
🟢
REDUCE TO MEDIUM
- Points set
- Track clear
- Normal track speed
(must reduce to 40 before next signal) - Next signal proceed
- If next signal observed is an improved aspect, requirement to reduce speed, no longer applies
Aspect and meaning
🔴
🟢
CLEAR MEDIUM SPEED
- Points set
- Clear track
- 40 for whole section up to next signal
- ATC: 40 only until whole train has cleared
the points (home Dep. sig.) - Next signal at proceed
Aspect and meaning
🔴
🟡
MEDIUM SPEED WARNING
- Points set
- Track clear
- 40 up to the next signal
- Next signal at stop

🔅
LOW SPEED CAUTION
- Points set
- Track may be occupied
- Max 15
- Next signal, if any, unknown
Can a low speed, caution be used for train movements into a bidirectional portion of track?
No
are low speed caution signals provided for on ATC home departure signals?
- Only to allow movement into the siding or adjacent track
- they cannot be used to allow train movements into a single line section
What signal will you typically get prior to a stop signal?
Either a normal speed warning, or a medium speed warning
Automatic signal with illuminated 65 or 80 reduced to medium. When must the train be at the allocated speed?
(At the reduce to medium with illuminated 65/80
OR
at the Medium speed with illuminated 65/80)
Before the next signal displaying clear medium speed with illuminated 65 or 80 - (not at the reduced to medium signal with 65/80)

CLEAR MEDIUM SPEED With illuminated 65 or 80
- Points set
- Speed as per signal value (65/80)
- Track clear
- Next signal at proceed
- High speed points
- Diverging movement

🅰️
ILLUMINATED A ON 3 pos HOME signal
- Points set for the mainline
- Signal operating in auto mode
- Auto signal rules apply (R1S3)
When detained at a home signal without the illuminated A displayed, what must you do?
Contact the area controller and remain on your train until authorized to pass the signal at stop
Do not pass the signal at stop, unless authorised (treat as a home signal)
How do you know if a signal box is switched out and if it is what mode do trains run in?
A sign is displayed on the door.
“Signal box closed”
(Run by passage of trains/ in fleeting mode)
When, in fleeting mode, (signal box is switched out), how will the signaller have set and secured the points?
Points will be set and secured for the normal running lines, so that trains can pass through the unattended location
When is the illuminated A ONLY ever displayed?
- When HOME signal it is attached to is at stop
- when Signal Box is switched out
What TYPE of signals are Dwarf signals?
Light type
What indications do 3 pos.DWARF signals display?
- Stop 🔴🔵🟣
- Low Speed Caution 🟡
- Clear Low Speed 🟢

🟢.
CLEAR LOW SPEED
- points set
- track clear
- 15 km/h MAX to next signal
(ATC - 15 only until train cleared the points) - next signal is PROCEED
On ATC which signals allow you to increase speed restriction (e.g. 40 or 15km/h) once cleared the points ?
CLEAR MEDIUM SPEED
or
CLEAR LOW SPEED
What is the purpose of a banner indicator?
To indicate the aspect of the signal ahead, where a clear view of that signal cannot be obtained
Are banner indicators fixed signals, and can they be considered as the signal in advance?
No
What do we do if a banner indicator is defective?
Just report the fault to TC and go past it expecting the next fixed signal to be at Stop
What are the following banner indicators?
STOP
NORMAL SPEED WARNING
CLEAR NORMAL SPEED
REDUCE TO MEDIUM
MEDIUM SPEED WARNING
STOP
NORMAL SPEED WARNING
CLEAR NORMAL SPEED
What is the purpose of repeating signals?
They are used to give advanced warning of a three position signal when leaving a to position signalled area
What aspects can repeating signals display?
- Warning
- Stop
- Reduce to Medium
