Respiratory Physiology - Diseases Flashcards
What are common lungs conditions?
asthma
emphysema
pulmonary oedema
Fibrotic lung disease
What is emphysema?
destruction of alveoli and reduces surface area for gas exchange
What is fibrotic lung disease?
thickened alveolar membrane slows gas exchange.
loss of lung compliance may decrease alveolar ventilation
What is asthma?
increased airway resistance (constricted bronchioles)
decreases airway ventilation, especially on exhale
What is pulmoonary edema?
fluid in the interstitial space increases diffusion distance.
arterial PCO2 may be normal due to higher CO2 solubility in water
What diseases have low PCO2 in the alveoli?
emphysema - could also be normal
fibrotic lung disease
asthma
What disease has normal PO2 in the alveoli?
pulmonary edema
Why does pulmonary edema have normal PCO2 in the alveoli but low PCO2 in the pulmonary artery?
the interstitial fluid does not favour the movement of O2 across the membrane, down the partial pressure gradient
What is the PCO2 like in edema?
could be normal due to CO2 solubility in water
What disease is shown?
fibrotic alveoli
What disease is shown?
fibrotic alveoli
What disease is shown?
pulmonary edema
What disease is shown and what could cause this?
emphysemic lungs
smoking
high compliance an low elastic recoil
