Outline the criteria required for adult safeguarding duties to be applied to an individual
18 or older
Care + support needs
Experiencing / at risk of ABUSE OR NEGLECT
as a result, unable to protect themselves due to care + support needs
Outline the basis of gaining an adult at risk’s consent
Adult must be informed before a referral is made to the local authority
If adult does not want safeguarding, find other ways of engaging the adult around risk, safety, wellbeing
Outline situations where safeguarding issues should be reported without consent
- Risk to children and / or other adult at risk
- Organisational abuse
- Abuse perpetrated by employee
- Serious harm / threat to life
- Relevant to criminal investigation
- Abuse on property operated by an organisation providing care

Explain the severity of domestic and organisational abuse
Incidents / pattern of incidents of controlling, coericive, threatenig behaviour.
Violence / abuse from person who has been intimate spouse / family member
What can we look out for when trying to identify abuse?
This is called Professional Curiosity

How shall we act if someone discloses abuse?
DO NOT:
Persistantly ask for more details
Be judgemental “why didn’t you run away”
Do not interput if person is recalling significant events
Do not contact abuser
Do not make promises you cannot keep, do not promise to keep it a secret, explain you may have to tell people who need to know
REMEMBER CONFIDENTIALITY - do not disclose the info to anyone who does not need to know
Describe how we can communicate with someone who is going through abuse
Ask perosn if they agree and are comfortable sharing the info with you
Ask open ended questions - do not lead
Ask what happened / happening to them
Ask if they would want to change anything
Describe what action you would take if the adult is in danger of repeated significant harm or has just been the victim of a serious crime
