FINAL GHM LECTURE Flashcards
Describe the classification of endocrinopathies
Primary - Problem with downstream glands
Secondary - Problem with pituitary
Tertiary - Problem with hypothalamus
Other - Damage to receptor mechanism in target tissue
Describe the causes, symptoms and treatment of panhypothyrodism
Decrease in production of all pituitary hormones (TSH, stimulates thyroid gland), therefore, deficiency in T3 and T4.
Causes:
1. Tumours: pituitary adenomas, tumours near pituitary gland, compress infundibular stalk
- Infections: meningites, inflammation + damage to pituitary gland - autoimmune
- Vascular disease: pituitary apoplexy - sudden loss of blood supply to pituitary gland, due to pituitary tumour. Sheehan syndrome: pituitary gland ischaemia - lack of blood supply
- Congenital hypoplasia: undeveloped pituitary gland from borth
- Surgery, radiation
Deficiency in
ACTH: Less cortisol therefore, Hypoglucemia
TSH: less thyroxine = fatigue, bradycardia, constpiation
LH, FSH: Less testosterone, oestrogen - delayed puberrty, micopenis, lack of male muscle, amenorrhoea
Growth Hormone: Dwarfism
