Explain the determinants of ventilation
A
Respiratory minute volume = volume of air inhaled / exhaled per min = tidal vol x respiratory rate
Ventilation dead space: Vol of inhaled air per min that does not take place in gas exchange
Anatomic dead space: air in conducting zone that does not reach respiratory zone
Alveolar dead space: Air reaches alveolar but does not take part in gas exchange
Alveolar ventilation vol = vol of air reaching alveoli + taking part in gas exchange
