- it fosters a sense of personal responsibility
- makes them learn self-discipline
- develops a moral character
What does research say about CP
- that it doesn’t accomplish anything and might actually make things worse
- it can result in immediate compliance, but does not work in the long run
WHY is spanking ineffective??? according to Gershoff (3 reasons)
- punishment needs to be consistent and delivered after EVERY instance, which is difficult for children to apply
- doesn’t teach children now behaviours or what to do in place of the problem behaviour
- teaches them that violence is acceptable
What are 4 unintended side-effects of spanking
- Poor quality of parent-child relationships
- Greater incidence of child abuse
- Impaired mental health and social well-being (5-point IQ decline)
- Adult aggression and antisocial behaviour (adults doing to their kids might start doing it to their spouse or family members)
