HABIT REVERSAL PROCEDURES PT.2 Flashcards
What are Habit Reversal Procedures?
Decreasing a behaviour in a way that does not concentrate on providing or withdrawing reinforcers, and is implemented by the target person (under supervision)
What are the two components of Habit Reversal Procedures
Awareness Training = person is taught to describe the problem behaviour and then to watch for it and notice when it occurs
Competing Response Training = Person is taught to perform a behaviour that is incompatible with the target behaviour (duration is 1-3 minutes)
eg. for nail biting behaviour, the person is instructed to put their arms at their sides and make their hands into fists when they feel like biting their nails
HRT may also apply Social Support, how is this done?
They can point out when the target behaviour occurs, and encourage/reinforce the use of the correct behaviour
HRT may also apply a Motivation strategy, what is this?
this is when a behaviour analyst works with the client to determine situations and antecedents for the target behaviour (reviewing everything like consequences)
What are the 3 steps to applying HRT
First the client learns to describe and identify the problem behaviour.
Second, they learn and practice the behaviour that is incompatible with the problem behaviour.
Lastly they review the harmful effects of the disorder and have someone provide reinforcement for engaging in the treatment
What is Aversion Therapy
A form of respondent conditioning where a unpleasant reinforcer is given after the undesired behaviour - best for treating alcoholism
What is Masked Negative Practice
a punishment procedure that requires the person to repeat the undesired behaviour for a time period (not as effective as HRT)
