Punishment Flashcards
Paul, a 7 year-old boy, had tantrums, poor motor coordination, and inappropriate social interaction (aggressive behaviours), what treatment program was given to him
An ABAB design, the baseline recording was aggressive behaviours
The treatment was aromatic ammonia along with verbal reprimand (disapproval)
What is Aromatic Ammonia
Smelling salts
What is the difference between the “punishment” and the “punisher”
punishment = when the consequence of a behaviour weakens the behaviour
Punisher = a stimulus/object/event that weakens behaviour
eg. after your dog poops on the floor, you give him a slap, the punishment is giving the slap, the punisher is the pain
What is Positive Punishment
when the presentation on a stimulus decreases behaviour
What are the 2 subtypes of Positive Punishment
Application of Aversive Activities = requires the person to perform an activity as a consequence
eg. a kid who swore has to wash Windows for 10 minutes after each swear
Application of Aversive Stimulation = punishes behaviour my delivering an aversive stimulus
eg. getting an electric shock from a device when you reach for a cigarette
What is Negative Punishment
the removal of an appetitive stimulus that decreases behaviour
eg. music played in a cafeteria during lunch would be turned off for 10 seconds of the noise level was too loud
What are the two subtypes of Negative Punishment
Time-Out from Positive Reinforcement = removes the individual from a reinforcing environment as a consequence
Response Cost = punishes behaviour by taking away a valued item/privilege
eg. having to pay a fine after parking illegally
What is the difference between Reinforcement and Punishment
reinforcement increases behaviour and punishment decreases behaviour
Whats the difference between an Unconditioned (primary) punisher and a Conditioned (secondary) punisher
Unconditioned (primary) = stimulus/event that is naturally aversive, you don’t have to learn its a punishment eg. pain due to an electrical shock
Conditioned (secondary) = a previously “neutral” stimulus that has become a punisher
eg.threats, warnings
What is a Generalized Conditioned Punisher
a conditioned punisher that has been paired with a number of other punishers
eg. hearing he word no!
What is the “immediacy” of punishment
punishment is most effective when it follows immediately after the behaviour
What is the”contingency” of punishment
punishment is most effective when it follows EVERY behaviour
What are “Individual Differences” in punishment
when a conditioned punishment depends on an individuals past history
What is the “magnitude of punishment”
the intensity of a punishment (more intense stimulus)
