Observing & Recording Behaviour Flashcards
What drug use (in 1980) tripled from those ages 12-17 from the 70s-80s
Marijuana Use
School counsellors decided that to prevent drug use, they had to address 2 things which were….
- lack of knowledge on the downside of drug use
- low levels of self-esteem (made them susceptible to the appeal of drugs)
What program was created in 1983 by the L.A Unified School District and the LAPD
D.A.R.E
Drug Abuse Resistance Program
What were the results of the DARE program (3 things)
- Students had higher self-esteem
- Students scored higher on knowledge about drugs
- Students had lower opinions on drug use and drug abusers
What did Bangert-Drowns do
preformed meta-analysis of 33 evaluations of drug education programs
What did Bangert-Drowns find in his meta analysis
that the programs were successful in changing knowledge and attitudes on drugs, but weren’t able to change drug-using behaviours
Explain the “Keeping’ it Real” DARE program
a new program based on research and behaviour-changing techniques.
It was a hands on program that builds decision-making skills and role-playing
reduced substance rate was 72% compared to control group
What are the characteristics of Experimental Analysis of Behaviour (EAB)
- long observation period (repeated or continuous measurement made of precisely defined responses)
- Within-subject experimental design
- visual analysis of graphed data is preferred (over statistical analysis)
- description of functional relations driven by data is preferred (over formal theory testing)
What are the 4 steps of a behaviour modification program
- Screening/Intake phase
- Preprogram assessment phase / baseline phase
- Treatment phase
- Follow-up phase
Explain the Screening/intake phase
- it is meant for taking the clients demographic information and establishing whether or not b-mod is the right choice for them.
- screen for “crisis condition” (child abuse, suicide risk)
- diagnose client according to DSM-5
Explain the Preprogram assessment / baseline phase
meant for defining and measuring their initial “baseline” level of behaviour
Explain the Treatment phase, and then the Follow-up phase
Treatment phase = actively applying training, intervention, or treatment program
Follow-up Phase = determining effects on behaviour following up the end of the treatment program (don’t want them to relapse after leaving)
WHO is being assessed in a b-mod program (their name) and how do we label them
Called the target person or client (not patient)
We use first “person-first language”
(a person who has autism)
Who is the Observer in a b-mod program (3 different kinds)
A professional (licensed analyst or psychologist)
A layperson (non professional like a teacher or coach)
A person observing themselves (the own person ex. self monitoring.
