Introduction to BMOD pt.2 Flashcards
What are the 3 aspects of psychology
Theoretical Aspect (conceptual thinking)
Experimental Aspect(basic research often w animals in a lab)
Applied Aspect (using research and treatments to solve a problem)
What are the 3 branches of of “Scientific study”
Behaviourism = philosophy of the science of behaviour
Experimental Analysis of Behavior (EAB) = scientific research on the relationship between environmental events and resulting behaviour
Behaviour Modification = application of experimental laws of learning to human behaviour
What is Behaviour Modification?
Analyzing the relationship between environment & behaviour, and changing the environment to help people modify their behaviour
Goal = improving peoples lives
B-mod does not rely on hypothetical constructs, what are constructs?
Constructs = theoretical concept that mediates behaviour
eg. personality traits, extraversion/intoversion
What is Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
using knowledge about human behaviour to reduce socially undesirable behaviours or increase desirable ones
Some people see Applied Behaviour Analysis as equivalent to B-mod, Others see B-mod as a larger category that includes …….. (3 things)
- Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
- Application of Respondent (classical/pavlovian conditioning)
- Behaviour and cognitive behaviour therapy
What did psychology (b-mod) in the 19th century focus on compared to the 20th century
19th = study of conscious experience
20th = study of observable behaviour
What are the 2 things Ivan Pavlov Studied and contributed
- realized that respondent behaviours are involuntary (stimulus and response form a reflex)
- Focused how environmental events and Stimuli affect Responses (S-R Psychology)
What did E.L Thorndike describe and what is it?
What was something he discussed ?
The Law of Effect = a behaviour that has a favourable outcome is more likely to occur once again in that situation in the future
He discussed how an animal can “Modify its behaviour”
Who founded behaviourism (came up with the philosophical approach to behaviourism)
J.B. Watson
Who developed ‘Methodological Behaviourism” and what is it?
J.B Watson
Methodological Behaviourism = the study of behaviour alone (no internal, mental state or event)
What is a Rationale (J.B Watson)
mental events that cannot be observed or studied
What did J.B Watson Propose about human activities
That most human activities were learned habits (an automatic behaviour)
Behaviour Modification typically defines problems in terms of __________ behaviours.
Measurable Behaviours
In behaviour modification, treatments work by affecting ones __________, which is comprised of _________
Environment, Stimuli
