Chaining Flashcards
What is a Behavioural chain?
When a complex behaviour is broken down into steps/behaviours (chains) that occur together in a certain order
Why are Behavioural Chains also called a “stimulus response chain”
Because each behaviour produces a stimulus that is used for the next behaviour
Why would buying a textbook, reading it the next day, and writing an exam a week later, NOT be considered a behavioural chain
Because there is too much time in between. the events need to happen right after each otters
What is Task Analysis
identifying all antecedent stimuli responses for the sequence
What are 3 ways Task Analysis can be conducted
- observe someone else doing the task, while the behaviour analyst records all the SD responses
- Recruit an expert who describes the SD and Responses
- Behaviour analyst performs the behaviour themselves
After Analysis, a task analysis data sheet is created, describe this sheet
- On the side column, all the steps (links) are listen, and on the other side, are the days
Every day the person goes through the steps and marks how far they got in the steps by blackening out the number, every day they do this
What is Total-task presentation
The individual attempts all links in the chain from BEGINNING to END. Prompting is provided for each link and reinforcement is only given after the last link
What are Pros and Cons of Total Task Presentation
Pros = good for tasks that are not as long or complex
Cons = doesn’t work for people with developmental disabilities
What is Backward Chaining
When you start with the FINAL link and work your way to the FIRST link.
What are the pros and cons of backward chaining
Pros = good for individuals who have limited abilities because they will complete the chain every time they attempt
Con = requires additional preparation for the behaviour analyst
What is Forward Chaining
Similar to Total-Task chaining, but instead the reinforcer is given after each step is competed
eg Step 1 = reinforcer
next try: Step 1+2 = reinforcer
next try: step 1+2+3 = reinforcer
What is a Pro and Con for Forward Chaining
goes in the right order, but more preparation for behaviour Analysis
What are Self-Prompting Methods
when the individual prompts themselves to learn the chain and requires less supervision from an analyst
Explain the self-prompting method “written task analysis”
The individual uses a lost of instructions that have the steps of the chain (ex.recipe in a cookbook)
Explain the self-prompting method “self-instructions”
learner recites a series of verbal prompts to guide their behaviour (saying it outlaid or in their head)
