POLYOMAVIRIDAE Flashcards
1
Q
General
A
Genus: Polyomavirus
Polyomaviridae (poly - many, oma – tumor)
2
Q
Morphology
A
Non-Enveloped
Icosahedral Capsid
dsDNA (circular)
superhelical; ~ 40 nm
3
Q
Replication/baltimore
A
Baltimore I
Replication in the nucleus by cellular transcriptase
4
Q
Resistance
A
Strong
56°C, 30 min; pH 3, lipid solvents
5
Q
Biological properties
A
Oncogenic - originates tumor cells(monkeys)
Latency - due to integration into the genome
Persistent infection in the kidney – viruria
Air borne
In cell cultures – microtumors
Haemagglutination
6
Q
Antigenic properties
A
Good
Because they integrate into host genome making them able to hide from the immune system
7
Q
Diagnosis
A
IF EM HAI NA-hybridzation PCR
8
Q
Virus/ other adaptions
A
- Murine Polyoma Virus (Lab Mice)
- SV40 -> Rodent tumors
- Bovine or Goose polyomavirus -> NEPHRITIS (inflammation of kidney)
HUMAN:
- BK virus: 80-90% sero+ but no symptoms =KIDNEY FAILURE
- JC Virus: 50-90% sero+, no symptoms
