ARENVIRIDAE Flashcards
1
Q
Genus: Arenviridae
A
(arena – sand)
2
Q
Morphology
A
- Enveloped – as all pleomorphic viruses are
–ssRNA genome. Segmented (2)
- Have ribosomes inside!
= no function but the “sand” seen in microscope - No capsid – “Pleomorphic”
- “Bud” through the cytoplasmic membrane
- 2 ends of NA hybridize together
- 2 key proteins on surface
3
Q
Resistance
A
Weak - enveloped
4
Q
Biological properties
A
- Baltimore V – need viral transcriptase
- Zoonoses! – only minor veterinary importance
5
Q
Antigenic properties
A
Cross reactions within genus
– Old world- and New world strains
6
Q
Diagnosis
A
Isolation, IF
Serology – VN, IF – needs certified lab
7
Q

A
- Old world arena virus
1. Lymphocytic choriomeninigitis (LCM) – inflames Lymphocytes
- Human meningitis paralysis
- Pet hamsters, mice children - Lassa fever – Africa
- Severe haemorrhages
