PHN Flashcards
science and art of preventing dse, prolonging life and promoting health through organized community effort to enable every citizen to realize his birthright of health and longetivity.
Public Health
Pertains to all efforts and activities organized by the community in the utilization of nutrition knowledge for the promotion of the nutritional well-being of individuals or groups within the framework of community life.
Public Health Nutrition (PHN)
It is about applying knowledge to the solution of nutrition-related health problems.
Public Health Nutrition (PHN)
Is the utilization of knowledge in nutrition for the promotion of the nutritional well-being of individuals and groups within the framework of community life.
It is a discipline that strives to improve the nutrition and health of individuals and groups within communities by organized action of the community
Community Nutrition
Is a professional person qualified to provide leadership and assume responsibilities for the promotion of the nutritional well-being of individuals and groups within the framework of community life.
Nutritionist-dietitian (ND)
Is a registered nutritionist-dietitian (RND) who works in government agencies, non-government organizations and private entities with public health or community nutrition activities. His/her roles revolve around nutrition program planning and mangement
Public health nutritionist or community nutritionist.
As an assessor of the people’s nutrition and nutrition related problems, the PHN:
a. identifies the nut problems of the community
b. helps the people become aware of their condition
c. possess the knowledge on individual and community nutritional assessment
a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
HEALTH
The determinants of health
• social and economic environment
• physical environment
• person’s individual characteristics and
behaviors
A group of people who share a common
geographical location, values, culture or language
Community
PUBLIC HEALTH
• It is the science and art of:
Preventing disease
Promoting health
Prolonging life
through organized community effort
the science and art of helping people change
their lifestyles in the direction of optimal health
Health Promotion
environmental and regulatory measures to confer protection on large population groups
Health Protection
screening and clinical services to eliminate
unnecessary disease, disability, and premature death caused by acute and chronic diseases
Disease Prevention
What is the mission of Public Health?
..”to assure conditions in which people can be
healthy”
Goal of PHN
To promote optimal nutrition and health for all members of the population by improving nutritional status and maintaining health
Secondary Determinants of
Nutritional Status
in the Environment Economic Socio-cultural Demographic Ecological, etc
Primary Determinants of
Nutritional Status
- Biological utilization of food
- Food Intake
- Nutritional Status
BASIC CONCEPTS IN PHN
- Good nutrition promotes and increases the people’s
productivity, helps promote the capacity for learning,
and enables people to participate actively in their
own development. - Responsive nutrition programs are need-oriented,
participative and provide those in need access to
the resources they offer and develop people’s self-reliance in meeting their own food needs - Certain population groups are more nutritionally at-
risk than others - Malnutrition is a multi-faceted and multidimensional
problem. - The multi-factorial causality of nutrition problems calls for a multi-disciplinary approach
- Strategy for solution demands coordination and
integration. - Government and private sector involvement and
participation are necessary - A comprehensive nutrition program should reach
all segments of the population, especially those who
are in need. - Sound, scientifically-based nutrition information
are available as bases for action. - Monitoring, evaluation and surveillance assist
in decision-making
___________ is the unification, integration,
synchronization of the efforts of group members so
as to provide unity of action in the pursuit of
common goals. It is a hidden force which binds all
the other functions of management.
The act of making all the people involved in a plan
or activity work together in an organized way.
Coordination
Combining and coordinating separate parts or
elements into a unified whole
The process of attaining close and seamless
coordination between several departments, groups,
organizations, systems, etc.
Integration
SCOPE OF PHN
- Knowing and understanding the “public” in terms of:
physiological/pathological conditions
food habits and preferences
needs, motivations and aspirations
nutritional knowledge, attitudes and practices
relevant ecological factors - Working with and for communities through social
mobilization (alliance building, networking,
community organizing) - Application of principles of nutrition based on science
and technology in:
• Community nutrition assessment
• Selection and implementation of interventions
• Monitoring and evaluation - Nutrition Promotion
- Integration, coordination, collaboration, and
convergence of resources
SIX BASIC COMPONENTS OF PHN:
- Application of the principles of nutrition in various
health and nutrition related programs - Understanding community nutrition problems
- Fundamentals of nutrition surveys and evaluation of
nutritional status - Nutrition Education
- Integration and coordination of nutrition activities
and services - Planning, implementation, monitoring and
evaluation of nutrition intervention program
